CONTENT AND SCOPE Wilbur Smith was born in Tooele in the early 20th century, and he spent much of his childhood out of doors camping with his father and with the Boy Scouts. Consequently he studied with the geology department at the University of Utah because of his interest of working out in the natural environment. Most of his life was spent as a mining engineer for Kennecott copper and later as a historian of mining activities in the Western United States, especially the mining boom in Utah around the turn of the century. The photograph collection of Wilbur Smith consists of primarily of Utah mining activity dealing with Tooele, Bingham, Lark, and other locations. Extensive images of the tools, machinery, steam and gas engines, railways, locomotives, interior-exterior of various smelting works, landscapes, etc, all dealing with mining in Utah from the mid 19th century up to ca. 1975. The rest of the collection deals with personal photographs of the Smith family, Wilbur's childhood, trips to various national parks of the western United States, and images of Salt Lake City and Tooele. Also included is an extensive postcard collection of a wide range of subjects from ca. 1950 to ca. 1975.
